My Review

“Breakthrough” is a faith-based drama about a 14-year-old boy who fell through the ice on a frozen lake and was underwater for fifteen minutes. After being declared dead, his mother prays for a miracle, with the drama proceeding from there. Roxann Dawson was outstanding in her first job in the director’s chair, with the film displaying good production values and a storyline with consistent pacing throughout the 116 minute running time. The excellent screenplay by Grant Nieporte was adapted from the 2017 non-fiction biography “The Impossible” by Joyce Smith and Ginger Kolbaba.

The cast includes Marcel Ruiz as the underwater and unconscious teenager, Chrissy Metz and Josh Lucas as his parents, Topher Grace as their church pastor, Dennis Haysbert as the doctor, Mike Colter as the first responder, and Phil Wickham as the worship leader. The watchable “Breakthrough” was a hit at the box office for producers Stephen Curry and DeVon Franklin, Fox 2000 Pictures, Franklin Entertainment, 20th Century Fox, and Walt Disney Pictures. This was 20th Century Fox’s first motion picture release after being purchased by The Walt Disney Company.

It was nominated for one Academy Award for Best Original Song (“I’m Standing With You” written by Diane Warren, performed by Metz). It was filmed in Manitoba, Canada. As a footnote, director Roxann Dawson originally gained fame in the role of B’Elanna Torres in the television program “Star Trek: Voyager” (1995-2001).
