My Review

“Eleanor the Great” is a drama film about a 94-year-old woman who moves from Florida back to her previous residence in New York City to live with her daughter after the death of her husband. One day she wanders into a Holocaust survivors support group, and tells a tale which takes on a dangerous life of its own. First-time director Scarlett Johannsson and screenwriter Tory Kamen put together a movie with insights into aging, friendship, grief, and Jewish identity.

June Squibb stars in the title role of Eleanor Morganstein. She goes a marvelous job in this in depth portrayal. Squibb has outstanding material to work with. Co-stars include Erin Kellyman, Jessica Hecht, Rita Zohar, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Greg Kaston, and Will Price. The watchable “Eleanor the Great” was a failure at the box office for producers Scarlett Johansson and Trudie Styler, Wayfarer Studios, These Pictures, Pinky Promise, Maven Screen Media, TriStar Pictures, and Sony Pictures Classics.
