My Review

“Flow” is an animated film telling the story of a cat caught in a great flood and finding refuge on a small boat with four other animals (golden retriever dog, secretary bird, beaver, lemur), who must cooperate to survive. Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis created a unique and innovative animated tale with no dialogue and an interesting theme of animals behaving like animals, and yet cooperating. Zilbalodis also co-wrote the screenplay (with Matiss Kaza), co-wrote the musical score (with Rihards Zalupe), and also handled the cinematography and editing.

The voice of the cat was provided by Miut, a pet of one of the crew members. The very watchable “Flow,” which has an 85 minute running time, was popular at the box office in Latvia and across Europe for producer Gints Zilbalodis, Sacrebleu Productions, Take Five, Dream Well Studio, Baltic Content Media, UFO Distribution, and Le Park Distribution. “Flow” was nominated for two Academy Awards, winning one for Best Animated Feature. The non-winner was Best International Feature Film. Take Five and Sacrebleu handled the colorful animation, with no deleted scenes in “Flow.”
