My Review

Ben Affleck makes his directorial debut in “Gone Baby Gone,” a hard-hitting crime drama about two investigators searching for a missing four-year-old girl. Their search is complicated by police corruption, child abuse, moral dilemmas in their local Boston neighborhood, and more. Affleck generally did a quality job with good production values, etc., but the script was a bit uneven as parts of the film went off-rail with boring dialogue. He co-wrote the screenplay with Aaron Stockard.

The cast includes Casey Affleck (Ben’s brother) and Michelle Monaghan as the two police investigators, Morgan Freeman as their boss, Ed Harris and John Ashton as police officers, Amy Ryan as the little girl’s mother, Amy Madigan and Titus Welliver as Ryan’s parents, and Mark Margolis, Michael K. Williams, Jimmy LeBlanc, Edi Gathegi, and Matthew Maher in supporting roles. The watchable “Gone Baby Gone” was modestly successful at the box office for producer Alan Ladd Jr., Miramax Films, The Ladd Company, and LivePlanet. It was filmed in Affleck’s hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, with loads of “Boston-ese” accents.
