My Review

“Guadalcanal Diary” is a World War II film chronicling the arrival of the first contingent of U. S. Marines on Guadalcanal Island in the Solomon Islands to start an offensive to remove military forces of the Empire of Japan. Director Lewis Seiler (“The Big Shot” 1942) and screenwriters Lamar Trotti and Jerome Cady put together a fine film which not only features notable battle scenes, but also back stories of individual soldiers involved.

The stars include Preston Foster, Lloyd Nolan, William Bendix, Richard Conte, Anthony Quinn, Roy Roberts, Lionel Stander, John Archer (father of Anne Archer), Eddie Acuff, and Richard Jaeckel in his movie debut. His career in motion pictures would continue until 1993. The watchable “Guadalcanal Diary” was popular at the wartime box office for 20th Century Fox.

The screenplay was adapted from the 1943 book “Guadalcanal Diaries” by Richard Tregaskis. The film was released in November, 1943, only a year after the actual invasion of August-September, 1942. It was filmed at the Marine Corp base at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California.
