My Review

“The Apostle” is a drama film about a Pentecostal preacher who must flee town due to beating up his wife’s lover. He goes to a neighboring state and starts up a new church. Director-screenwriter Robert Duvall created quite a heavy melodrama in which he also stars in the title role. There’s not a dull moment in this well-crafted film with good production values, memorable performances, and good writing. It was a modest success at the box office for independent production companies Butcher’s Run Films and October Films.

The stars of the show are Robert Duvall, Farrah Fawcett, Billy Bob Thornton, June Carter Cash, Miranda Richardson, John Beasley, Walton Goggins, Billy Joe Shaver, Rick Dial, and Todd Allen. Duvall was nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards that year. The watchable “The Apostle” was filmed in rural western Louisiana.
