My Review

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz play explorers in 1925 in Egypt who accidentally revive a dead high priest with supernatural powers in “The Mummy.” The action and heavy drama proceed from there. Director-screenwriter Stephen Sommers (“The Jungle Book” 1994) put together an excellent action-adventure film with marvelous special effects, acceptable performances, and an all-around great script which keeps the audience on the edge of their collective seats for the 125 minute running time.

The supporting cast includes Bernard Fox (Dr. Bombay of television’s “Bewitched” 1964-1972) as Captain Havelock, Arnold Vosloo as the Imhotep the heavy of the piece, John Hannah, Kevin J. O’Connor, Jonathan Hyde, Erick Avari, Stephen Dunham, and Patricia Valasquez. The fun and watchable escapist programming “The Mummy” was the sixth highest grossing movie of 1999 for Alphaville Films and Universal Pictures. It was nominated for one Academy Award for Best Sound.
