My Review

Brandon Fraser and Rachel Weisz return to battle Imhotep in “The Mummy Returns.” Director-screenwriter Stephen Sommers kept high quality and it shows on every level: Good production values, fun performances, out-of-this-world special effects, plenty of action sequences, and special writing.

The cast includes Fraser, Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Patricia Velasquez, Oded Fehr, and Duane Johnson as the Scorpion King. The watchable “The Mummy Returns” was the seventh highest grossing film of 2001 for Alphaville Films and Universal Studios. A spinoff for Johnson called “The Scorpion King” came out in 2002, which started a new film series sans the Rock.

A second sequel, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” (2008), set in China, featured Fraser, Maria Bello replacing Weisz, Jet Li, and Michelle Yeoh. A reboot of the franchise, “The Mummy” was released in 2017 with Tom Cruise but flopped at the box office and led to the cancelation of Universal Studios’ “Universal Monsters” film series, which was meant to compete with Disney’s Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ DC Universe.
