My Review

“Tom and Jerry: The Movie” brings the iconic duo back to show business for the first time in twenty five years. Director Phil Roman did a good job with animation, but failed with a weak storyline from a mediocre script by Dennis Marks. They probably erred in giving Tom and Jerry dialogue, which they never had since premiering in 1940 from creators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Barbera served as creative consultant to this picture.

The voice cast includes Richard Kind as Tom, Dana Hill as Jerry, Anndi McAfee, Charlotte Rae, Henry Gibson, Rip Taylor, and Betty Jean Ward as Tom’s owner. The lackluster yet still entertaining “Tom and Jerry: The Movie” flopped big time at the box office for producer Phil Roman, Turner Entertainment Company, Film Roman, and Miramax Films. One positive of the film is the outstanding musical score composed by Henry Mancini, with songs composed by Mancini and Leslie Bricusse.
