My Review

“Wuthering Heights” is the classic Gothic romantic drama centering on the tragic love between Heathcliff and Cathy. Director William Wyler (“Dodsworth” 1936) created a tasteful adaptation of the 1847 novel of the same name by Emily Bronte. The superb screenplay was written by Charles MacArthur and Ben Hecht. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning one for Best Cinematography/Black-and-White (Gregg Toland). Non-winners include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Larry Olivier), Best Supporting Actress (Geraldine Fitzgerald), Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction, and Best Original Score (Alfred Newman).

At the head of the cast are Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff and Merle Oberon as Catherine. They without a doubt have delivered the best portrayal of the star-crossed lovers in the many versions of the film over the decades. Co-stars include David Niven, Flora Robson, Donald Crisp, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Hugh Williams, Leo G. Carroll, Cecil Kellaway, and Cecil Humphreys as Judge Linton. The very watchable “Wuthering Heights” was a hit at the box office for producer Samuel Goldwyn and United Artists.
