A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)

My Review

Tom Hanks received an Oscar nomination for his sensitive portrayal of beloved television personality Fred Rogers, whose show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” entertained preschool audiences from 1968 to 2001. The other star of the movie, Matthew Rhys, also delivered a stellar performance as a jaded journalist who is assigned to do a story on the innocuous Rogers, who was also an ordained Presbyterian minister.

Director Marielle Heller (“The Diary of a Teenage Girl” 2015) seemed to get the optimal performances out of Hanks and Rhys, as well as keeping the picture on an even keel throughout. The screenplay was written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster. Co-stars include Chris Cooper, Enrico Colantoni, and Christine Lahti. The watchable “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” was a modest success at the box office for TriStar Pictures, Tencent Pictures, and Sony Pictures Releasing. It was filmed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
