A Man Called Horse (1970)

My Review

“A Man Called Horse” is a western drama film about an English big game hunter who is captured and enslaved by the Sioux Indian tribe, appearing to loose his own cultural identity and melding with the indigenous culture. The riveting performance of Richard Harris dominated the entire motion picture under the expert guidance of director Elliot Silverstein (“Cat Ballou” 1965). The screenplay by Jack DeWitt was adapted from a 1950 short story of the same name by Dorothy M. Johnson.

Co-stars with Harris include Judith Anderson, Jean Gascon, Dub Taylor, James Gammon, Manu Tapou, Corinna Tsopei, William Jordan, Lina Marin, Manuel Padilla Jr., Eddie Little Sky, and Iron Eyes Cody as the Medicine Man. The watchable “A Man Called Horse” was popular at the box office for Cinema Center Films, Sandy Howard Productions, Estudios Churubusco, and National General Pictures. Richard Harris reprised his role in two future sequels: “The Return of a Man Called Horse” (1976) and “Triumphs of a Man Called Horse” (1983).
