My Review

“Aladdin” is an animated musical comedy fantasy film, adapted from Arab folklore, about a boy who stumbles upon a magic lamp that contains a genie who grants him three wishes. Producers-directors-screenwriters John Musker and Ron Clements put together this movie with comedy, drama, romance, colorful animation, and great music from Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice.

The voice cast includes Scott Weinger as Aladdin, Robin Williams as The Genie, Linda Larkin as Princess Jasmine, Gilbert Gottfried as Iago, Douglas Seale as the Sultan, Jonathan Freeman as Jafar, Frank Welker as Abu, Jim Cummings as the Captain of the Guards, Charlie Adler as Gazeem the thief, and Corey Burton as Prince Achmed.

“Aladdin” was the highest grossing film of 1992 for Walt Disney Feature Animation, Walt Disney Pictures, and The Walt Disney Company. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning two: Best Original Score (Menken) and Best Original Song (“A Whole New World,” music by Menken, lyrics by Rice). The non-winners include Best Original Song (“Friend Like Me,” music by Menken, lyrics by Ashman), Best Sound, and Best Sound Effects Editing. It was produced at Walt Disney Feature Animation in Glendale, California. A live-action film adaptation of “Aladdin” was released in 2019.
