Babe (1995)

My Review

“Babe” is a comedy-drama family film about a farm pig who desires to do the job of a sheep dog, which is herding sheep. He meets some resistance from other animals, as this does not conform to the usual social hierarchy of a farm. Australian director Chris Noonan put together a warm-hearted family film with good production values, from a screenplay he co-wrote with George Miller. It was adapted from “The Sheep-Pig,” a 1983 children’s novel by British author Dick King-Smith.

The cast includes Christine Cavanaugh as the voice of Babe, James Cromwell as the owner of the farm, Magda Szubanski as his wife, as well as Zoe Burton, Paul Goddard, Hugo Weaving, Miriam Margolyes, Patrika Darbo, and Roscoe Lee Browne as the Narrator. The watchable “Babe” was a big hit at the box office for Kennedy Miller Productions and Universal Pictures. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning one for Best Visual Effects. Non-winners include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Cromwell), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, and Best Film Editing.
