Battle of the Bulge (1965)

My Review

“Battle of the Bulge” is an epic war film about the final conflict of World War II in Europe. Director Ken Annakin (“Swiss Family Robinson” 1960) put together a highly fictionalized account of the battle in an attempt to make it acceptable for a motion picture format, including the wide Cinerama screen and a 170 minute running time.

The film did receive mostly positive reviews at the time, recognizing the high quality production values, marvelous cinematography (in Technicolor and in Cinemascope) by Jack Hildyard, marvelous performances by big name stars, and a well written screenplay by Philip Yordan, Milton Sperling, and John Nelson. It was filmed in Spain.

The cast includes Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw, Robert Ryan, Dana Andrews Pier Angeli, George Montgomery, Charles Bronson, Ty Hardin, James MacArthur, Telly Savalas, and William Conrad as the narrator. The very watchable “Battle of the Bulge” was a massive hit at the box office Cinerama Productions, United States Pictures, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
