Beautiful But Broke (1944)

My Review

“Beautiful But Broke” is a musical-comedy B-film about a secretary who takes over her boss’s theatrical agency when he joins the Army during World War II. She forms an all-female orchestra with women singers, who unfortunatley get stranded in Nevada. The comedy and hilarity proceeds from there, well directed by Charles Barton (“Honolulu Lu” 1941) from an acceptable screenplay by Monte Brice. The film contains a generous amount of big band music, managed by John Leipold.

Joan Davis heads the cast as the secretary, doing a capable job in the lead role. She would later become famous for starring in the popular television show “I Married Joan” with Jim Backus (on NBC 1952-1955). Co-stars here include Jane Frazee, Judy Clark, John Hubbard, Bob Haymes, Grace Hale, George McKay, and Ferris Taylor as the mayor. “Beautiful But Broke” was a production of Columbia Pictures.
