The Best Picture of 2014 is…..”Birdman.” This is a black comedy about a faded actor, best known for playing a superhero named Birdman, attempting to make a comeback by starring in a Broadway play. Director-screenwriter Alejandro G. Inarritu (“Babel” 2006) put together a poorly written and sloppily executed film that really has no redeeming values, including not only bad production values, but really no production values at all. The one interesting feature worth mentioning is that “Birdman” was filmed in one continuous take.
Michael Keaton heads the cast as Birdman, one of the lousiest performances of his career. Co-stars include Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Emma Stone, Amy Ryan, Naomi Watts, Bill Camp, Paula Pell, and Andrea Riseborough. The unwatchable “Birdman” was modestly profitable at the box office for Regency Enterprises, Worldview Entertainment, and Fox Searchlight Pictures.
It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning four – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). Non-winners include Best Actor (Keaton), Best Supporting Actor (Norton), Best Supporting Actress (Stone), Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. It was filmed in New York City, New York.
