Bombshell (2019)

My Review

“Bombshell” is a biographical drama about the women at Fox News who banded together to expose CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment. Director Jay Roach (“Trumbo” 2015) and screenwriter Charles Randolph did an excellent job of keeping this film organized and easy to follow to help the audience navigate their way through the numerous characters and complex situations depicted. It contains excellent production values, outstanding writing, and memorable performances.

The cast is headed by John Lithgow as Roger Ailes, Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly, and Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson. They are truly outstanding in these roles. Co-stars include Margot Robbie as a composite character, Malcolm McDowell as Rupert Merdoch, Allison Janney as Susan Estrich, Kate McKinnon as a producer, Connie Britton as Beth Ailes, Richard Kind as Rudy Giuliani, Holland Taylor as Ailes’ assistant, Stephen Root as an attorney, and Ben Lawson and Josh Lawson as Merdoch’s two sons.

The watchable “Bombshell” was a modest hit at the box office for producers Jay Roach and Charlize Theron, Bron Studios, Annapurna Pictures, Denver and Delilah Productions, Lighthouse Management Media, and Lionsgate Films. It was nominated for three Academy Awards winning one for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The non-winners were Best Actress (Theron) and Best Supporting Actress (Robbie). “Bombshell” was filmed entirely in and around Los Angeles.
