Book Club (2018)

My Review

Chick flick comedy abounds in producer-director Bill Holderman’s “Book Club.” This story of four senior citizens who get together once a month to discuss their favorite book bears little resemblance to your grandmother’s sewing circle, as the principal roles are filled by Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Diane Keaton, and Mary Steenburgen.

Holderman did a commendable job (in his directorial debut) herding the big stars into a watchable motion picture which basically appeals to older white women. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Erin Simms.

The supporting cast also contains big names like Ed Begley Jr., Richard Dreyfuss, Andy Garcia, Don Johnson, Craig T. Nelson, Alicia Silverstone, Katie Aselton, Lili Bordan, and Wallace Shawn. The watchable and entertaining “Book Club” was a box office sensation for Paramount Pictures, and was filmed in and around the Los Angeles area. The sequel was “Book Club: The Next Chapter” (2023) with much of the same cast.
