My Review

“Boyz n the Hood” follows the lives of three friends from childhood through their teen years in South Central Los Angeles. First-time director-screenwriter John Singleton skillfully directed the cast depicting the dangers of modern urban life, with Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, and Morris Chestnut in the lead roles. All three were at the beginning of successful careers.

The supporting cast features Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, Nia Long, Tyra Ferrell, Whitman Mayo, Dedrick D. Gobert, Regina King, Lloyd Avery II, Jessie Lawrence Ferguson, and John Singleton as the mailman. “Boyz n the Hood” was successful at the box office for Columbia Pictures. It was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Director and Best Screenplay, and filmed in Los Angeles.
