My Review

“City of Gold” is a documentary film about Pulitzer Prize winning Jonathan Gold (1960-2018), food critic for the Los Angeles Times. Director-screenwriter Laura Gabbert and her camera crew follow Gold all around the city and county of Los Angeles as he visits restaurants large and small.

Numerous people were interviewed including his wife, Laurie Ochoa, a fellow journalist and his editor (“Jon is usually late with his column”), and his fellow food critics (“Everywhere I go he has already visited!”) His knowledge of LA eateries is exhaustive – one column was called “The Year I Ate Pico Boulevard.” Gold visited every restaurant on Pico which goes from downtown Los Angeles to the beach in Santa Monica. “City of Gold” has a 91 minute running time, and was produced by Laura Gabbert and IFC Films/Sundance Selects.
