Crimson Tide (1995)

My Review

“Crimson Tide” is an excellent drama film about the conflict between a U. S. nuclear submarine commander and his first officer, arising from different interpretations of an order to launch their missiles during an apparent clash with Russia. Director Tony Scott (“Top Gun” 1986) kept this two hour movie moving at a steady pace, with some great stars and a wonderful screenplay by Michael Schiffer, keeping the audience on the edge of their collective seats.

Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington have great chemistry in the lead roles. These two popular actors usually turn in very engaging performances. The diverse supporting cast includes Rocky Carroll, Matt Craven, Danny Nucci, Rick Schroder, Ryan Phillippe, Viggo Mortensen, James Gandolfini, Mark Christopher Lawrence, George Dzundza, Lillo Brancato, Steve Zahn, Daniel von Bargen, Jason Robards, Richard Valeriani, and Scott Grimes.

Hans Zimmer won a Grammy Award for his excellent musical score. And the film was nominated for three Oscars: Best Editing, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing. “Crimson Tide” kept its head above water at the box office for producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Hollywood Pictures, Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, and The Walt Disney Company. It was primarily filmed at the Culver Studios in Culver City, California, the former location of RKO and Desilu Productions.
