Dad (1989)

My Review

“Dad” is a comedy-drama family film about a man’s relationship with his elderly father and his teenage son. These three generations of fathers and sons are superbly depicted by Jack Lemmon, Ted Danson, and Ethan Hawke. The group had skillful direction, production, and screenwriting by Gary David Goldberg, who was at the helm of the popular television show “Family Ties” (1982-1989).

The supporting cast includes Olympic Dukakis, Kathy Baker, Kevin Spacey, J. T. Walsh, Zakes Mokae, Peter Michael Goetz, Richard McGonagle, Sprague Grayden, and Chris Lemmon, Jack Lemmon’s son, as the younger version of his character. “Dad” had modest success in theatrical release for Amblin Entertainment, Ubu Productions, and Universal Pictures. It received one Oscar nomination for Best Makeup. It was filmed in Massachusetts and in Los Angeles.
