“East/West” is a French historical film telling the story of a family who returns to the Soviet Union in 1946 when Stalin invites exiles back “home.” This tale centers on a Russian doctor, his French wife, and their small son who realize almost immediately that they have made a mistake, as her French passport is destroyed and no one is allowed to leave the Soviet Union for any reason. This riveting drama was tightly directed by Regis Wargnier, French filmmaker who also co-wrote the screenplay.
The cast delivers magnificent performances, in the French and Russian languages, featuring Sandrine Bonnaire as Marie Golovin, Oleg Menshikov as Alexey Golovin, Sergei Bodrov Jr. as Sasha, and Catherine Deneuve as Gabrielle Devele. “East/West” (“Est-Quest” in French) was popular at the box office for producer Yves Marmion, France 3 Cinema, Mate Producciones, and UGC Fox Distribution. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and was filmed in Ukraine and Bulgaria.
