My Review

“Father of the Bride” is a romantic comedy about a young woman returning from a trip to Europe and announcing her marital engagement, throwing the family into chaos. Director Charles Shyer (“Baby Boom” 1987) did an excellent job in this remake of the 1950 film classic which featured Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. He co-wrote the screenplay with Nancy Meyers, Frances Goodrich, and Albert Hackett. (Goodrich and Hackett penned the script for the 1950 version.)

The cast includes Steve Martin and Diane Keaton as the parents, Kimberly Williams in her film debut as the daughter, George Newbern as her fiance, Martin Short, Kieran Culkin, BD Wong, Peter Michael Goetz, and Eugene Levy. The watchable and wildly entertaining “Father of the Bride” was a hit at the box office for producer Nancy Meyers, Touchstone Pictures, Sandollar Productions, Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, and The Walt Disney Company.

It was filmed primarily in Pasadena and in surrounding communities in Los Angeles County, California. A third major “Father of the Bride” was released in 2022 starring Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan.
