Free Guy (2021)

My Review

Ryan Reynolds stars in “Free Guy” as a bank teller who discovers he is actually a support character in a video game. This innovative science fiction comedy picture was capably directed by Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum” 2006) and well written by Zak Penn and Matt Lieberman.

Reynolds, who also serves as one of the producers with Levy, delivered a refreshingly “virtuous” performance in the title role. Co-stars include Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Channing Tatum, Taika Waititi, Lil Rey Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and cameos by Chris Evans and Alex Trebek (his final film role). Actors in voice roles include Hugh Jackman, Dwayne Johnson, Tina Fey, and John Krasinsky.

The watchable “Free Guy” was popular in theatrical release for Berlanti Productions, 21 Lapse Entertainment, Maximum Effort Production, Lit Entertainment Group, 20th Century Studios, and The Walt Disney Company. It was filmed in Boston, Mass., and received one Oscar nod for Best Visual Effects.
