It’s Christmas time and the Wet Bandits are again chasing young Kevin McCallister, this time in a different city in “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.” Producer-screenwriter John Hughes and director Chris Columbus (“Home Alone” 1990) have again booked our protagonist on the wrong airplane, this time to New York City, while the rest of the Chicago McCallister’s travel to Florida for Christmas. Kevin stays at the famous Plaza Hotel, where the staff manages to join in with the hilarity.
Since nothing succeeds like success, Hughes hired most of the cast to return for the second time around. Macaulay Culkin plays Kevin; Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are Harry and Marv; and John Heard and Catherine O’Hara once again are the forgetful Peter and Kate McCallister. Others include Tim Curry, Rob Schneider, Dana Ivey, Brenda Fricker, Eddie Bracken, Michael C. Maronna, Hillary Wolf, Devin Ratray, Gerry Bamman, Senta Moses, Anna Slotkey, Leigh Zimmerman, Ralph Foody, Ron Canada, and Kieran Culkin.
He is Macaulay’s brother, who in the future is to gain fame as Roman Roy on HBO’s “Succession” (2018-2023). There were cameos by Bob Eubanks, Rip Taylor, Jaye P. Morgan, Jimmie Walker, Ally Sheedy, and Donald J. Trump, real estate magnate who owns the Plaza Hotel and would later become the 45th and 47th President of the United States (2017-2021 and 2025-?).
“Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” was the third highest grossing film of 1992 for producer John Hughes, Hughes Entertainment, and 20th Century Fox. John Williams penned the outstanding musical score, and was filmed in New York City and Chicago.
