Honeysuckle Rose (1980)

My Review

“Honeysuckle Rose” is a western musical romantic drama about a veteran country music singer who falls into an affair with a much younger woman while on tour. It threatens not only his marriage but his relationship with his son. Director Jerry Schatzberg (“Scarecrow” 1973) put together an engrossing drama with some good performances. The screenplay was written by John Binder, Carol Sobieski, and William D. Wittliff.

The cast includes Willie Nelson as the singer, Dyan Cannon as the missus, Amy Irving as the other woman, Joey Floyd as their son, Slim Pickens, Mickey Rooney Jr., Lane Smith, Priscilla Pointer, Diana Scarwid, and Emmylou Harris. The watchable “Honeysuckle Rose” was a modest hit at the box office for producer Sydney Pollack, Major Studio Partners, and Warner Bros. Pictures. It was filmed in Texas, and had one Oscar nod for Best Original Song (“On the Road Again,” music, lyrics, and performed by Willie Nelson). Amy Irving won the Worst Supporting Actress award from the Golden Raspberry Awards.
