In the Name of the Father (1993)

My Review

“In the Name of the Father” is the true story of four people falsely convicted of the 1974 Guildford pub bombings in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Producer-director Jim Sheridan (“My Left Foot” 1989), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Terry George, which was much too long and “gabby” in parts.

The cast displayed some fine performances such as Daniel Day-Lewis, Emma Thompson, John Lynch, Corin Redgrave, Pete Postlethwaite, Paterson Joseph, Marie Jones, Mark Shepherd, and Tom Wilkinson. The film received seven Academy Award nods, including actors Day-Lewis, Thompson, and Postlethwaite.

“In the Name of the Father” seems to be targeted to art house movie aficionados, so buyer beware. Watchability of this film is questionable, and was a flop in art house box office release for Hell’s Kitchen Films and Universal Pictures.
