Joker (2019)

My Review

“Joker” gives us a fascinating look into the back story of the Joker, well known as one of Batman’s most famous enemies. Director Todd Phillips (“Starsky and Hutch” 2004), who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver, went into the history and psychological background of Arthur Fleck, a failed comedian who turns to a life of crime. The story is set in Gotham City and also deals with the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents.

Joaquin Pheonix is chilling as the Joker, dominating most scenes in the film. The supporting cast includes Robert De Niro, Brett Cullen, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, Zazie Beetz, and Frances Conroy. “Joker” was the sixth highest grossing film of 2019 for producer Bradley Cooper, DC Films, Village Roadshow Pictures, Bron Creative, and Warner Bros. Pictures.

“Joker” was filmed in New York City and New Jersey, and was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, winning two – Best Actor (Pheonix) and Best Original Score (Hildur Guonadottir). The film was also nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award – “Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property.”
