My Review

Renee Zellweger delivers a memorable performance as actress-singer Judy Garland in “Judy,” including singing twelve of her most popular tracks. The film follows Garland in the final year of her life in 1968 as she travels to London for a grueling series of sold-out concerts. Director Rupert Goold (“True Story” 2015) did a good job with production values and a lucid screenplay by Tom Edge. It was filmed in London, UK.

The supporting cast includes Finn Wittrock as Mickey Deans (Judy’s 5th husband), Rufus Sewell as Sidney Luft (3rd husband), Jessie Buckley as her assistant, Gemma-Leigh Devereaux as Liza Minnelli, Bella Ramsey as Lorna Luft, Lewin Lloyd as Joseph Luft, Fenella Woolgar as Margaret Hamilton, Gus Barry as Mickey Rooney, Richard Cordery as Louis B. Mayer, and Michael Gambon as a producer in London. “Judy” was a modest success at the box office for BBC Films, Ingenious Media, and 20th Century Fox. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, winning one for Best Actress (Zellweger). The non-winner was Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
