Live by Night (2016)

My Review

“Live by Night” is the story of a Florida gangster who made tons of money during the Prohibition Era, and some of the problems he gets into along the way. Director-screenwriter Ben Affleck took great care in developing the project with good production values and a stylish quality, but the story moved slowly in certain segments, making the 129 minute running time move slowly. This is due to Affleck’s uneven direction; He is a lightly experienced director after all, with only five feature-length films under his belt. (A sixth movie “Animals” will be released in October, 2026.)

The cast includes Ben Affleck, Elle Fanning, Zoe Saldana, Brendan Gleeson, Sienna Miller, Chris Messina, Chris Cooper, Anthony Michael Hall, and Clark Gregg. “Live by Night” was a massive box office bomb for producer Leonardo DiCaprio, Ratpac-Dune Entertainment, Appian Way Productions, Pearl Street Films, and Warner Bros. Pictures. It was filmed in Georgia, Massachusetts, and California.
