Manchester by the Sea (2016)

My Review

“Manchester by the Sea” is a drama film about a single man who gains custody of his teenage nephew after the death of his brother. The brilliant peeling away of psychological layers revealing the background of the main character was well handled by director-screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan (“You Can Count on Me” 2000) and Casey Affleck in the lead role. It was filmed in Massachusetts.

Co-stars include Michelle Williams as his ex-wife, Lucas Hedges as the nephew, Kyle Chandler as the brother (in flashbacks), Tate Donovan, Gretchen Mol, and Matthew Broderick. “Manchester by the Sea” was a hit at the box office for producer Matt Damon, Amazon Studios, and Roadside Attractions. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two – Best Actor (Affleck) and Best Original Screenplay. Non-winners include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Hedges), and Best Supporting Actress (Williams).
