Moonlight (2016)

My Review

The Best Picture of 2016 is…..”Moonlight.” This is the story of a young black man as he struggles with his sexuality and social identity. The film is divided into three parts – childhood, high school, and the final act showing his survival as a young adult. Good direction by Barry Jenkins, who co-wrote the screenplay with Tarell Alvin McCraney, brought out exceptional performances, especially Trevante Rhodes in the lead role.

Co-stars include Andre Holland, Naomi Harris, Mahershala Ali, Ashton Sanders, and Alex Hibbert. “Moonlight” was a success at the box office for A24 Films, Plan B Entertainment, and Pastel Productions. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning three – Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Ali), and Best Screenplay. Non-winners include Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Harris), Best Cinematography (James Laxton), Best Film Editing, and Best Musical Score (Nicholas Britell).
