Walt Disney Pictures is continuing the practice of making live-action remakes of their own classic animated films, this time with “Mulan.” The redux of the popular 1998 movie of the same name has some fantastic results: Great performances, loads of action, beautiful costumes, stunning scenery (filming in China and New Zealand), and a marvelous story originating in ancient Chinese folklore.
Director Niki Caro (“Whale Rider” 2002) struck the perfect balance throughout, remaining faithful to the original and keeping this one flowing at an even pace. The screenplay was written by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek, and Elizabeth Martin.
The lead role was filled by Liu Yifei, who seems as well versed in action sequences as she was in subtle performances in closeup. Co-stars include Donnie Yen, Yoson An, Gong Li, Jimmy Wong, Jet Li, Jason Scott Lee, and Tzi Ma and Rosalind Chao as Mulan’s parents. The watchable “Mulan” was a bomb at the box office (probably due to Covid19 shutdowns) for Jason T. Reed Productions, Good Fear Content, Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, and The Walt Disney Company.
