My Review

“My Man Godfrey” is a screwball comedy movie about a socialite who hires a homeless man to be her butler, and then falls in love with him. The comedy proceeds from there, well directed by Gregory La Cava (“Gabriel Over the White House” 1933) from an excellent script by Morrie Ryskind and Eric Hatch. It was adapted from a 1935 novel “1101 Park Avenue” by Eric Hatch.

The cast includes William Powell, Carole Lombard, Mischa Auer, Alice Brady, Gail Patrick, Jean Dixon, Eugene Pallette, Alan Mowbray, and Jane Wyman. The enjoyable “My Man Godfrey” was a modest hit at the box office for Universal Pictures. It was solely filmed on the Universal backlot, and received six Oscar nods (zero wins) – Best Director, Best Actor (Powell), Best Actress (Lombard), Best Supporting Actor (Auer), Best Supporting Actress (Brady), and Best Adapted Screenplay.
