My Review

“Night and Day” is a fictionalized musical biographical film about Cole Porter (1891-1964) featuring an all-star cast. Director Michael Curtiz (“Casablanca” 1943) did an excellent job at the helm of this winsome musical, with Ray Heindorf orchestrating and conducting all production numbers. Much of the cast performed Porter’s songs, even though they did not have a musical background.

The cast includes Cary Grant as Cole Porter, Alexis Smith, Jane Wyman, Eve Arden, Alan Hale, Dorothy Malone, Mary Martin, Monty Woolley, Ginny Simms, Henry Stephenson, and Sig Ruman. “Night and Day” was the seventh highest grossing film of 1946 for executive producer Jack L. Warner and Warner Bros. Pictures. It received one Oscar nod for Best Musical Scoring (Heindorf, Max Steiner).
