Night Club Scandal (1937)

My Review

“Night Club Scandal” is a police procedural drama about a doctor who murders his wife and frames her lover for the crime. The police swing into action, initially confused about the perpetrator of the crime. This melodrama suffers from over-direction by Ralph Murphy (“Dick Turpin’s Ride” 1951), a mediocre script by Lillie Hayward, and a low budget, typical of B-movies.

The cast includes John Barrymore (Drew Barrymore’s grandfather), Lynne Overman, Louise Campbell, Harvey Stephens, J. Carroll Nash, and Charles Bickford, who is especially guilty of over-acting as Detective McKinley. Despite deficiencies, the mediocre B-movie “Night Club Scandal” is watchable escapist programming and was popular at the Depression Era box office for Paramount Pictures. It was filmed at Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
