Old Acquaintance (1943)

My Review

Bette Davis is in the thick of the dramatics in “Old Acquaintance.” The story follows the ups and downs of the friendship of two women (Davis and Miriam Hopkins) from 1924 to 1932 to 1941. The well written screenplay by John Van Druten and Lenore Coffee and tight direction by Vincent Sherman keeps the nearly two hour film moving rapidly.

The supporting cast includes Gig Young, John Loder, Dolores Moran, Phillip Reed, Roscoe Karns, Esther Dale, and Anne Revere. The very watchable “Old Aquaintance,” a success at the box office for Warner Bros. Pictures, compares favorably to an inferior remake, “Rich and Famous,” starring Jacqueline Bisset and Candice Bergen, released in 1981.
