Old Yeller (1957)

“Old Yeller” is a story of a family in Texas after the Civil War who adopt a stray dog that helps defend their two sons against wild hogs, bobcats, and even bears. The film became a beloved family classic, well directed by Robert Stevenson (“Mary Poppins” 1964) and written by Fred Jipson and William Tunberg. It was based on Jipson’s 1956 children’s novel of the same name.

The stars of the show include Dorothy McGuire and Fess Parker as the parents, Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran as the boys, as well as Chuck Connors, Jeff York, Beverly Washburn, and Spike as Old Yeller. The very watchable “Old Yeller” was a hit in theatrical release for producer Walt Disney, Walt Disney Productions, and Buena Vista Distribution. It was filmed in Technicolor.
