One for the Money (2012)

My Review

“One for the Money” is a crime-comedy film about an unemployed woman who takes on a job as a bail bond recovery agent, also called a bounty hunter. Her first assignment is a former vice cop guilty of skipping out on his half million dollar bail, who also happens to be her boy friend from high school. The comedy and drama proceed from there, well directed by Julie Ann Robinson (“The Last Song” 2010). The screenplay by Liz Brixius, Stacy Sherman, and Karen Ray was adapted from the 1994 novel of the same name by Janet Evanovich.

The comedy and drama flowed quite well making for an enjoyable 91 minute running time. The stars include Katherine Heigl, Jason O’Mara, John Leguizamo, Sherri Shepard, Fisher Stevens, Debra Monk, Daniel Sunjata, and Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Edna Mazur. This is Reynolds’ final feature film role in a career that began in 1948 in a Warner Bros. comedy “June Bride,” in which she had an uncredited part with Bette Davis and Robert Montgomery.

The watchable “One for the Money” was a flop at the box office for Lakeshore Entertainment, Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, Wendy Finerman Productions, and Lionsgate Films. It was shot in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Katherine Heigl was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress.
