Pot o’Gold (1941)

Terrible production values, mediocre music, and a ho-hum storyline are all characteristics of “Pot o’Gold.” This film was based on a popular radio show whose gimmick was that anyone at home picked up the phone when the producer was calling would win one thousand dollars. Director George Marshall (“The Ghost Breakers” 1940) put together this awful dud of a motion picture from a script by Monte Brice and Andrew Bennison.

The cast includes James Stewart, Paulette Goddard, Horace Heidt, Charles Winninger, Mary Gordon, and Art Carney as the radio announcer. “Pot o’Gold” made a modest profit at the box office for producer James Roosevelt (son of President Franklin Roosevelt) and United Artists. Leading man Jimmy Stewart labeled it as “the worst movie I ever made.”
