My Review

“Rules Don’t Apply” is a romantic drama set in the era when Howard Hughes was a movie producer and depicts his volatile relationships with his employees at RKO Studios. Director-screenwriter Warren Beatty had some trouble focusing due to the large amount of subject matter he was dealing with; he was “all over the place.” Despite unfocused direction, this is still a watchable film with a 127 minute running time, and was filmed in and around the Los Angeles area.

The cast also includes Beatty in the lead role of Howard Hughes, which he handled professionally enough. Co-stars include Lily Collins, Alden Ehrenreich, Annette Benning, Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, Candace Bergen, Dabney Coleman, Ed Harris, Amy Madigan, Martin Sheen, Paul Sorvino, and Steve Coogan as Col. Briggs. “Rules Don’t Apply” was one of the biggest box office bombs and flops of 2016 for producer Warren Beatty, Regency Enterprises, RatPac Entertainment, and 20th Century Fox. Warren Beatty has not been active in films since “Rules Don’t Apply” wrapped.
