My Review

“Scarlet Street” is a film noir story of an unhappily married man who becomes involved with a beautiful woman he does not realize is a prostitute. The numerous twists and turns proceed from there, well managed by director Fritz Lang (“Metropolis” 1927) from a masterpiece of a screenplay by Dudley Nichols. It was adapted from a 1931 French novel “La Chienne” by Georges de la Fouchardiere.

The cast includes Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, Dan Duryea, Margaret Lindsay, Jess Barker, Charles Kemper, Samuel S. Hinds, and Russell Hicks. “Scarlet Street” was a modest hit at the box office for producer Fritz Lang, Walter Wanger Productions, Diana Production Company, and Universal Pictures.
