The Big Picture (1989)

My Review

“The Big Picture” is a comedy movie about an Ohio film student trying to get his start in the motion picture industry in Los Angeles. Director Christopher Guest put together a mildly amusing film that seems to be somewhat autobiographical; this is Guest’s big screen debut. He co-wrote the passable screenplay with Michael Varhol and Michael McKean.

The cast turns out good performances including Kevin Bacon in the lead role. Co-stars include Emily Longstreth, J. T. Walsh, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michael McKean, Teri Hatcher, Dan Schneider, Jason Gould, Kim Miyori, Don Franklin, and Tracy Brooks Swope. There are cameo appearances by June Lockhart, Eddie Albert, Roddy McDowell, Richard Belzer, John Cleese, Steven Collins, Fran Drescher, Elliot Gould, and Martin Short.

The watchable “The Big Picture” was a big flop at the box office for Aspen Film Society and Columbia Pictures.
