“The Bodyguard” took the world by storm in 1992, becoming the second highest-grossing film of the year, after Walt Disney’s “Aladdin.” The story is about a former Secret Service agent (Kevin Costner) becoming a bodyguard to the stars, especially a superstar singer played by Whitney Houston. A romance develops between the two, and the story takes off from there.
The film was expertly and tastefully handled by director Mick Jackson (“L. A. Story” 1991) from a top-rate screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan. (Costner became acquainted with Kasdan while starring in his 1985 film “Silverado.”) Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston have stunning chemistry between them on the big screen. This was originally planned as a project starring Steve McQueen and Diana Ross back in 1976, but the deal fell apart.
The supporting cast includes Gary Kemp, Bill Cobbs, Ralph Waite, Michele Lamar Richards, Mike Starr, Tomas Arana, DeVaughn Nixon, Gerry Bamman, Richard Schiff, Chris Connelly, David Foster, Robert Wuhl, and Debbie Reynolds in a cameo as herself.
Another star of the show is the soundtrack, which sold forty-two million copies worldwide. “I Will Always Love You,” written by Dolly Parton, was a big hit on the record charts for Whitney Houston. “The Bodyguard” was a massive hit in theatrical release for producers Kevin Costner and Lawrence Kasdan, Tig Productions, Kasdan Pictures, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
