The Daytrippers (1997)

My Review

“The Daytrippers” is a dark comedy about a distraught wife who discovers a mysterious love note written to her husband. She decides to drive travel to Manhattan to confront him, accompanied by her parents, sister, and sis’s boyfriend. The wacky comedy and drama proceeds from there. Director-screenwriter Greg Mottola, in his big screen debut, crafts an interesting and absorbing movie that tickles the viewers’ funny bone and holds their collective attention throughout the 87 minute running time.

The talented ensemble cast really do the job here. They include Hope Davis and Stanley Tucci as the couple in question, Anne Meara and Pat McNamara as her parents, Parker Posey as her sister, Liev Schreiber as her boyfriend, with Marcia Gay Harden, Campbell Scott (son of George C. Scott), Douglas McGrath, Paul Herman, and Marc Grapey as characters they meet along the way. The watchable escapist programming “The Daytrippers” underperformed in theatrical release for producers Steven Soderberg and Campbell Scott, Alliance Communications, and Cinepix Film Properties. As one might expect, the film was shot on location in New York City and Long Island, New York.
