The Farmer’s Daughter (1947)

My Review

“The Farmer’s Daughter” is a comedy film about an energetic Swedish-American farm girl who moves to the big city to become a nurse. She falls on hard times and takes on a job as a maid for a Congressman, and eventually goes into politics herself. This outstanding comedy-drama is really a showcase for star Loretta Young, capably directed by H. C. Potter from an excellent screenplay by Allen Rivkin and Laura Kerr.

The cast includes Loretta Young, Joseph Cotton, Ethel Barrymore, Charles Bickford, Harry Davenport, Lex Barker, James Arness, and Charles Lane. Young won the Academy Award for Best Actress, with Bickford nominated for Best Supporting Actor. The very watchable “The Farmer’s Daughter” was a big hit at the box office for producer Dore Schary, Vanguard Films, and RKO Radio Pictures. A television series on ABC “The Farmer’s Daughter” starring Inger Stevens and William Windom ran from 1963-1966.
