“The Favourite” is a black comedy set in 1705 in England telling the story of two young women vying to be the court favourite of Queen Anne. Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (“The Lobster” 2015) gave the movie some laughs from the screenplay written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara. Viewers enjoyment of the film will depend upon their appreciation of dark humor. It has good production values, authentic period costumes, etc., mostly filmed in Hatfield House in Hatfield, England.
The cast includes Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alywn, James Smith, Mark Gatiss, Jennifer White, Lily-Rose Stevens, and Jenny Rainsford. “The Favourite” was successful in theatrical release for Scarlett Films, Element Pictures, Arcana, Film4 Productions, Waypoint Entertainment, and Fox Searchlight Pictures.
It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning one for Best Actress (Colman). Non-winners include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Stone and Weisz), Best Cinematography (Robbie Ryan), Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, and Best Costume Design.
