The Great Wall (2016)

My Review

“The Great Wall” is a fantasy film telling the story of a European mercenary in China in the Middle Ages who helps the local soldiers defend the Wall and the Chinese homeland against vicious monsters. Veteran Chinese director Zhang Yimou put together a film with a seamless plot and a fast-moving 103 minute running time, but is predictable and formulaic. The screenplay was written by Carlo Bernard, Doug Miro, and Tony Gilroy.

The cast includes Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal, William Dafoe, Andy Lau, Jing Tian, Zhang Hanyu, Kenny Lin, and Eddie Pang. “The Great Wall” made money at the box office, but not enough to cover the production budget, advertising expenses, and theatrical revenue splits. Bad new for Legendary Pictures, Atlas Entertainment, China Film Group, Fuji Television Network, and Universal Pictures. It was filmed completely in China.
